FAQs

Helpful information for parents and swimmers

Find quick answers to the questions we hear most often. If you need anything else, please email info@dndswim.co.uk.

Do I have to stay on site during lessons?

During lessons all parents and guardians must stay on site for safety reasons. You are not required to stay poolside and we encourage families to make use of the venue bar areas where available.

How many children per lesson?

Class sizes for stages 1–4 are capped at six swimmers. Stages 5–7 have seven swimmers. We run on a 3:1 ratio up to stage 4, with an instructor and an assistant in the water.

Are the teachers in the water with the children?

Instructors and assistants remain in the water with children up to stage 4 for maximum support. From stage 5 onward, most instructors teach from poolside to create more space and demonstrate skills clearly.

How long are lessons?

Our mainstream sessions are 30 minutes. Squad sessions run for 60 minutes.

When should I buy goggles?

We encourage families to buy goggles once swimmers reach improver levels. We discourage goggles for beginners so they learn to feel confident with water on their face and can self-rescue. We will let you know when goggles become helpful.

Does my child have to wear a swim cap?

Swim caps are mandatory from stage 5 (unless sensory needs prevent it) and encouraged for all stages. Caps can be purchased through us—please get in touch if you would like to order one.

What happens if my child does not attend their class?

We do not offer replacement sessions or refunds for non-attendance.

How long will it take my child to swim?

Progress is different for every child and depends on factors such as age, confidence, natural ability, and willingness to learn. We focus on steady, confident progress rather than arbitrary timelines.

What age can my child join from?

We welcome children from the term before they start reception.

How old should my child be to use their own gender's changing rooms?

We ask that children use their own gender's changing room from age eight where possible.

Do I need to get in the water with my child?

No, parents and guardians stay poolside or in venue lounges. Our instructors are in the water with swimmers up to stage 4.

How long are courses?

Courses run during term time in line with local council dates. Re-enrolment is automatic unless you provide notice.

How do I keep up to date with my child's progress?

The family portal is updated weekly with progress notes, and full reports are sent twice per year.
